For me? It was all about the stroller.
I’ve always loved going for strolls around my neighborhood, so of course I couldn’t wait to take them with a baby in tow. When I first started researching different models, however, I experienced what can only be described as utterly depressing sticker shock.
A warning for parents-to-be: Strollers can be expensive.
Jen Neal, a local mama in my hometown of York, Pennsylvania, had a similar experience when her daughter was born.
“Being a mom is such a wonderful experience,” she said. “But it was very stressful buying all the must-have-baby-survival-gear, especially the stroller. I feel that strollers are an essential parenting tool, but I was shocked at how expensive they were.”
The experience led Jen to launch York’s first Baby Stroller Derby, a fun event where parents can come together for a 2K stroll with their kiddos while chatting with other local moms and dads. It will take place the morning of Saturday, August 23rd at Santander Stadium in York.
The event includes a collection of gently used strollers to be donated to low-income families who need them. (Strollers must have been purchased within the last 3 years and will be checked for any safety/recall issues.)
There will also be various contests (including a Diaper Dash for the wee little ones), prizes, music, and other good stuff. The event was the winner of the York County Industrial Development Authority’s annual Community Event contest.
Tickets to the Baby Stroller Derby are $15 through the end of July (price increases to $20 in August).
Want free tickets to the event? Simply leave a comment at the bottom of this post that says “I want free tickets!” You will then be entered into a random drawing for two of ’em. The giveaway is open until midnight on Friday, August 1. Winner will be notified via email on Saturday, August 2.
